Family Fun Activities for the Summer in Dallas-Fort Worth
June 20, 2019
Families are flocking to Dallas-Fort Worth, both to visit and to stay. Great housing, a vibrant cultural life, exceptional schools, and a welcoming vibe all top the list of reasons to move here. Whether you’re a new resident or have lived here for years, you may struggle to beat the heat in the dry, hot summer months. No matter what you’re interested in, ArrowBrooke has rounded up some great summer family activities in Dallas-Fort Worth.
Stay Home and Get Outside
You don’t need to spend money or even leave your home in ArrowBrooke to enjoy some family-friendly summer fun. Try some of the following:
- Break out some sidewalk chalk and create art in your yard. Or play old-fashioned games like hopscotch and four square.
- If you have young children, follow this mantra: when a baby is crabby, put them in water. Fill up the baby pool. Throw in some buckets, toy trucks, and squirt guns, and watch your kids burn off their grumpy energy.
- Build a family garden. You can grow a lot in a small raised cedar bed, and you can build one in just an hour or two. Peppers, tomatoes, and succulents all thrive in the DFW heat.
- Make some delicious summer-inspired recipes. You don’t have to go outside to enjoy the summer. Try freezing juice for delicious and healthy popsicles, making lemonade, or putting together a salad. Kids love helping to prepare food, and they’re more likely to eat meals in which they participated.
Head to the Park
Dallas-Fort Worth is home to some of the state’s best parks. Check out Klyde Warren Park for splash pads and food trucks. Or take the kids to the gorgeous rainbow-hued playground at Celebration Park. ArrowBrooke will also soon be home to a new district park called ArrowBrooke Park, which will be constructed in three phases over the next three years. Phase 1, which is anticipated to be completed this year, features walkways, park benches and soccer fields.
Have a Close Encounter With Animals
If your kids love animals, turn their hobby into a chance to learn. Invest in a caterpillar growing kit or an ant farm to learn about animals and their life cycle. Or try getting a cool bug house, which allows you to catch insects and then watch them explore. Just make sure you release them after a few hours. If keeping insects isn’t your thing, DFW offers plenty of opportunities to see animals up close and personal. Check out some of the following:
If you want to observe animals in their natural habitat and encourage kids to keep a close eye out for tiny wildlife, take them on an excursion to the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, which offers kid-friendly events year-round.
If your kids are climbing the walls–literally and metaphorically–don’t try to suppress their natural energy. Work with it! Take them to a climbing gym. Summit is a great option, with a range of walls for kids and adults of all experience and ability levels. If you want something a bit more cushioned, take them to Pump it Up, which offers plenty of opportunities to climb things without the fall risk. Play at Trinity Forest Adventure Park and challenge your friends and family!
Embrace the Water
When it’s too hot to do anything else, it’s time to head to the water. Homeowners love meeting at The Gathering Place Amenity Center in ArrowBrooke to cool off in the pool and attend one of the many events planned by our lifestyle director throughout the summer.
Other water options include nearby Lake Lewisville, which offers kayak and paddle boat renting. Head to DFW Surf at Lake Lewisville and rent a kayak. Or head to Water Works Park in Denton or Hydrous Wake Park for a day chock full of watery fun and adventure.
The key to fun this summer is to ignore the pressure for perfection. Your summer doesn’t need to be Pinterest-able, and not every spare moment must be educational. Sit back and soak it up. You only get so many summers with your kids, and that means you deserve to enjoy this precious time, too!
