Denton Aims to Be Largest ‘Green Power’ City in America
February 19, 2018
Living in Denton County, ArrowBrooke residents know the natural amenities including nearby lakes and parks are among our area’s most prized features. That’s why we’re excited to hear that the City of Denton is trailblazing on the sustainability forefront with plans to become the largest city in America powered 100% by renewable energy sources.
This month, the Denton City Council voted to revise the city’s Renewable Denton Plan to include a goal of powering the city with solar and wind energy by 2020.
Denton Mayor Chris Watts told NBC 5, “We want to make sure we are doing what we can for the environment, but it is also good business because of the market that we are in right now.”
Currently, the largest city in America powered 100% by clean energy is Georgetown, Texas. With a population over 130,000, Denton will overtake Georgetown in the No. 1 spot once the city hits its green power goal.
“This is the beginning of an energy transformation in Denton,” said Ed Soph, Denton resident and Sierra Club member, in a press release. “The foundation has been laid for the day when Denton has its own renewable generation capability with community and utility-scale solar installations.”
